How to test a webcam

  1. Allow the camera. The browser asks once. The live view appears and shows exactly what a call would.
  2. Pick the camera and the microphone. A laptop with a plugged-in camera or headset lists both; choose the ones the meeting should use.
  3. Record a few seconds and play it back. Framing, lighting, lip sync and the sound of your voice, all checked before the call.

What to look at

Framing and light
Eyes about a third from the top, a light in front of you rather than behind. The live view shows what others see.
The right microphone
Laptops often default to the built-in mic even with a headset plugged in. The list makes the choice explicit.
Nothing shows
A black view usually means another app holds the camera, or the browser was refused permission. Close the other app, allow the camera, reload.
