Why your Reel dies at second three.

Nobody decides to watch a video. They decide not to leave. That decision takes about three seconds, and most posts lose it before they've said anything.

What the first three seconds are for

They are not for introducing yourself. They are not for a logo. They are not for "hey guys." They are for one thing: giving the viewer a reason to stay that's stronger than the next video.

The reasons that work are boring and specific. A question they've asked themselves. A result they want. A claim they don't believe. A thing that's about to happen.

The four openings that hold

  • The objection. "Does this actually work on oily skin?" You've named the doubt before they could. Now they need the answer.
  • The result first. Show the after. Then the before. Then how. Nobody stays for a setup; everybody stays for a reveal they've already seen.
  • The claim. "You're using too much of this." Disagreement is attention.
  • The motion. Something is already happening when the video starts: pouring, cutting, opening. The eye follows movement before the brain reads text.

What to cut

  • The first two seconds of any clip. You started recording before you started. Everyone does.
  • Anything before the first word or the first movement.
  • Your name and your brand. Put them in the caption. The video has three seconds and they are spoken for.
  • The music-only intro. Silence with text beats a beat with nothing.

Text on screen is not optional

Most people watch on mute. If the opening line is spoken, it needs to be written too, large, in the top third of the frame where the caption doesn't cover it. If you only do one thing from this guide, do this.

How to check yours

Play the video. Stop it at three seconds. Ask: if I saw only this, would I know why to keep watching? If the answer is "not yet," cut until it is. Then look at the score after you post. Watch time tells you exactly where people left. It's almost always earlier than you think.

Tools for this

  • Video thumbnail to pick the first frame people actually see.
  • A safe-zone overlay in your editor so the hook is not under the caption.
  • Transcribe video to read your first three seconds as text.
