How to compress a video online

  1. Drop the file in. MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, one or several at once.
  2. Pick a size. Balanced for social, Small when the platform is fighting you, Best quality for a big screen, or a target size in MB when there's a hard limit.
  3. Download. You get the same format back by default, or the one you picked: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV.

What the settings do

Balanced, Small, Best quality
Quality-targeted encoding. The encoder spends bits where your eye notices and saves them where it doesn't, so a phone recording or screen capture usually comes out 50 to 80 percent smaller with no visible change at Balanced.
Target size
Tell it the number of megabytes. It works out the bitrate from your video's length, lands under the target, and if the target is tight for the length it steps the resolution down so the picture stays watchable instead of turning to mush.
Resolution
Keep leaves the frame size alone. 1080p is plenty for every social feed, 720p halves the size again, 480p and 360p are for previews and messaging. Nothing is ever upscaled.
Cap at 30 fps
60 fps footage needs roughly twice the data of 30 fps for the same quality. Unless it's gameplay or slow motion, 30 is what the feed plays anyway.
Format
Original keeps the container you started with. MP4 is what every platform and phone plays, MOV is what Apple editors expect, MKV holds anything, and WebM is the open format browsers stream natively. MP4, MOV and MKV use H.264; WebM uses VP9, which takes a few times longer to make.
Remove audio
Saves about a megabyte a minute. Right for silent screen recordings, or video whose music you'll replace in the edit.

Questions people ask

Is this video compressor free?

Yes. No account, no watermark, no trial.

Does it add a watermark?

No. The output is your video and nothing else.

Which formats does it accept, and what do I get back?

In: MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. Out: the same format by default, or whichever of the four you pick. MP4, MOV and MKV carry H.264 video; WebM carries VP9.

How do I compress a video without losing quality?

Choose Best quality. It re-encodes at a quality-targeted setting that keeps detail and typically still cuts 40 to 70 percent from a phone or screen recording, because most cameras write far more data than the picture needs. Balanced is the right default for social.

How do I get a video under 16 MB for WhatsApp, 10 MB for Discord, or 25 MB for email?

Choose Target size and pick the preset. The tool sets the bitrate from your video's length and lowers the resolution if that's what it takes to stay watchable at that size. Very long clips can't fit tiny targets; it will tell you rather than hand you a blur.

How much smaller will my video be?

It depends on what made it. Phone recordings and screen captures are usually 50 to 80 percent smaller at Balanced. A file that was already tightly compressed, like a download from a social platform, shrinks less because there's less waste to remove.

What are the limits?

Up to 10 videos at once, in a browser that can play them. Free space on the device is the only other limit.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in any modern browser, no app. Short clips take moments; long 4K videos take longer, and go faster on a recent computer.

What happens to my file?

Nothing is uploaded. The video is compressed in your browser and never leaves your device.

Should I cap the frame rate or remove audio?

Cap at 30 fps if the footage is 60 fps and isn't gameplay or slow motion; it roughly halves what the video needs. Remove audio for silent screen recordings or when you'll add music in the edit. Both are off by default.
