Where 1080 × 1080 is the right size
- Instagram square posts
- Instagram displays squares at 1080 wide and re-compresses anything larger. Uploading exactly 1080 × 1080 gives it nothing to resample.
- Profile pictures
- Instagram, X, TikTok and LinkedIn all show round or square avatars from a square source. 1080 × 1080 is sharp on every screen and well above their minimums.
- Ads and thumbnails
- Square placements in Meta ads and many marketplaces ask for 1080 × 1080 as the standard.
Getting the crop right
- The square starts in the middle of the photo. For a subject off to one side, drag the square onto it.
- Photos smaller than 1080 pixels are scaled up and will look soft. The tool warns when that happens.
Questions people ask
What is 1080 × 1080 used for?
Instagram square posts, profile pictures on most platforms, and square ad placements. It is the standard square size.
Will the photo be cropped?
Yes, to the square you place, so the result is exactly square. Or choose Keep the whole photo and all of it goes on a blurred, solid or transparent background.
What if my photo is portrait or landscape?
The square starts in the middle and you drag it where you want it; the rest is cut off. To keep everything, choose Keep the whole photo.
Will a small photo look bad at 1080?
A photo below 1080 pixels is scaled up and looks soft. The tool warns you. Start from the largest version you have.
Can I resize several at once?
One at a time, so you can place each square. Drop the next photo onto the stage when the first is done.
