How to resize a photo for an Instagram profile picture

  1. Drop the photo in. The largest version you have.
  2. Place the square. It opens at 1080 × 1080 in the middle of the photo; drag it onto the face and pull a corner to take in more or less.
  3. Download and upload to Instagram. Instagram shows a circle cut from the square, so keep the face inside the middle circle.

What to upload
A square at 1080 × 1080. Instagram downsizes it, and a large source survives the downsizing sharper than a small one. Anything below 320 gets scaled up and looks soft.
The circle
The corners of the square are cut off. Keep the face, logo or text inside the circle that touches the square's edges.

What makes an avatar read at small size

  • Face or logo filling most of the frame; at feed size the avatar is under 40 pixels wide.
  • One plain background color. Busy backgrounds turn into noise at that size.
  • Strong contrast between subject and background, so it still reads in dark mode.

Why does my profile picture look blurry?

Usually the source was smaller than 320 pixels, or a screenshot. Start from the original photo at full size and use the 1080 × 1080 preset.

How do I keep my face in the circle?

Instagram cuts a circle from the square, so the corners go. Drag the square so the face sits in its middle, with a little room around it.

Does the same file work for TikTok, X and LinkedIn?

Yes. All of them show a circle or square from a square source, and 1080 × 1080 is above their minimums.

Can I make it a circle with a transparent background?

Instagram does the circle itself. If you need a circular PNG for a website, choose Circle under Shape and the download has transparent corners.
