How to add a watermark to a photo
- Drop the photos in. One or many. JPG, PNG or WebP. The first one becomes the live preview.
- Type the text or drop a logo. Set the size and opacity, pick a corner on the grid or tile it across the image, tilt it if you like.
- Apply and download. Every photo gets the same watermark. Same format as the original, or JPG, PNG or WebP.
Where to put a watermark so it can't be cropped out
- Corner
- The least intrusive. Bottom right at 3 percent margin is the convention. Easy to crop, so it is a signature, not a lock.
- Center
- Sits over the subject. Hard to remove, easy to notice. Use a lower opacity, around 30 percent, and a larger size.
- Tile
- Repeats the mark diagonally over the whole photo. The standard for proofs, previews and stock samples. Spacing 2 with 25 percent opacity covers everything without hiding the picture.
- Opacity and size
- 30 to 50 percent opacity and 5 to 10 percent of the width for text keeps it readable in a feed without taking over the photo.
Text or logo
- Text
- A name, a handle or a copyright line. Sans is the safe default; bold sans for a stamp; serif for a photography look. The © symbol is already in the default text.
- Logo
- A PNG with a transparent background keeps its shape over any photo. An SVG scales cleanly at any size. A JPG logo brings its white rectangle with it.
- Batch
- Sizes are set as a share of each photo's width, so a mix of portrait and landscape shots comes out consistent.
Questions people ask
How do I watermark many photos at once?
Drop them all in together. The preview shows the first photo; the settings apply to every one. Press Apply and download and each photo gets the same watermark at the same relative size and position, then download them one by one or all together.
Does a watermark lower the image quality?
The watermark is drawn on the pixels and the file is saved again. Keep the format the same as the original and quality at 92 and the difference is not visible. PNG in, PNG out is lossless.
Can other people remove the watermark?
A small corner mark is easy to crop off. A mark across the middle or a diagonal tile over the whole photo is much harder to remove cleanly, at the cost of being more visible. Pick by how much the photo is worth to you.
Can I use my logo?
Yes. Switch to Logo and drop a PNG with a transparent background or an SVG. A JPG logo works too, but it comes with its white box. The size is a share of the photo's width so it scales with each image in a batch.
What opacity should a watermark be?
Between 30 and 50 percent for a signature that doesn't fight the photo, 60 to 80 for a proof or a preview you don't want reused. White text sits well on most photos; switch to a dark color on bright, pale images.
What size should it be?
Text at 4 to 8 percent of the width is readable without dominating. A logo at 12 to 20 percent in a corner is the usual range. On a vertical photo those percentages produce a smaller mark, so nudge them up.
