No crop fit the whole photo to Instagram, square or Story.

Instagram cuts anything taller than 4:5 or wider than 1.91:1. This puts the whole photo on a blurred or solid background at the exact size each placement wants.

How to post the whole photo without cropping

  1. Drop the photo in. It opens inside a 4:5 frame with nothing cut off.
  2. Pick the frame. Instagram 4:5, 3:4 or square, Story 9:16, YouTube 16:9, or a platform size. Choose a blurred copy of the photo, a colour or a transparent background, and pull a corner for more room around the photo.
  3. Download. At the frame's own pixels, which keeps every one of the photo's, or at the platform's size, as JPG, PNG or WebP.

Why Instagram crops your photo

Each placement has a fixed shape. The photo is scaled to fit inside that shape and the space around it is filled, so nothing is lost.

  • The feed accepts 1:1, 4:5 and, since 2025, 3:4 for portrait, and 1.91:1 for landscape. Anything taller than 4:5 or wider than 1.91:1 is cut to fit. A phone photo taken in portrait is usually 3:4, which now fits; a panorama or a 16:9 still does not.
  • Stories and Reels are 9:16. A square or landscape photo posted there is either cropped to fill the screen or shown small with a plain background. Putting it on your own blurred background gives you the full photo at full width.
  • Carousels use the ratio of the first slide for every slide, so a mixed set of photos gets cropped unevenly. Framing them all to the same ratio first keeps every slide complete.

Sizes each placement wants

Instagram feed
Portrait 4:5 at 1080 × 1350, square at 1080 × 1080, 3:4 at 1080 × 1440, landscape 1.91:1 at 1080 × 566.
Instagram Stories and Reels covers
9:16 at 1080 × 1920. Keep text out of the top and bottom 250 px, where the app draws its own controls.
TikTok
9:16 at 1080 × 1920 for covers and photo posts.
YouTube
16:9 at 1920 × 1080 for community posts and 1280 × 720 for thumbnails. A 4:5 photo goes on a blurred 16:9 background nicely.
Pinterest
2:3 at 1000 × 1500. Taller pins get cut in the feed, so frame long images to 2:3.
LinkedIn and X
Square or 4:5 shows the largest in the feed. X shows 16:9 in the timeline and crops the rest.

Blurred, solid or transparent

Blurred photo
A copy of the photo, scaled to cover the frame and blurred, sits behind the original. It matches the photo's colours, so the band reads as part of the image, and it is dimmed a little so the photo stands out.
Colour
White, black or any colour from the picker, for a clean look or a brand colour.
Transparent
Only the photo, with clear space around it, as a PNG. For layering in Canva or a video editor.

Questions people ask

How do I post a landscape photo on Instagram without cropping?

Choose Instagram portrait 4:5 or square, keep the blurred background, and download. The whole photo sits in the middle with a soft version of itself filling the space above and below, and the feed shows it without cutting anything off.

How do I make a photo square without cropping?

Pick Square 1:1. The photo is scaled to fit inside the square and the leftover space is filled with blur, a colour of your choice or left transparent (PNG). Pick Instagram square and the export is 1080 × 1080, which is what Instagram, LinkedIn and most profile grids want.

Does the blurred background lower the quality of the photo?

No. Only the background copy is blurred. The photo itself is drawn once, scaled to fit the frame. The frame starts at the photo's own pixels, so nothing is lost; at a platform size it is downscaled the same way Instagram would downscale it.

What size should I export?

The preset sizes are what each placement displays: 1080 × 1350 for Instagram portrait, 1080 × 1080 square, 1080 × 1920 for Stories and Reels, 1920 × 1080 for YouTube. Bigger files get downscaled by the platform anyway. Leave the frame at its own pixels when the file is going to print or a client, not a feed.

Can I do several photos at once?

One at a time, so you can check each frame before you download. Drop the next photo onto the stage when the first is done.

Will the border show on Stories?

Stories are 9:16 and the phone shows the whole frame, so a blurred or colored band is visible above and below a landscape photo. That is the point: the photo is complete instead of cropped. If you would rather have no band, switch to Crop with 9:16.
