How to convert MP4 to MOV
- Drop the MP4 in. One file or several.
- Leave the settings, or shrink it too. Format is already set to MOV. "Best quality" keeps it looking the same; "Balanced" or a target size makes it smaller on the way through.
- Download the MOV. Ready for Final Cut, iMovie, QuickTime and any client who asked for a MOV.
Why MOV, and what actually changes
- The container changes, the video mostly does not
- MP4 and MOV are wrappers. Both usually hold H.264 video. With "Best quality" the picture looks the same and the file size barely moves, unless you also choose to shrink it.
- Apple apps prefer it
- Final Cut Pro, iMovie and QuickTime handle MOV natively; some MP4 files, especially from phones and screen recorders, import with missing audio or a wrong frame rate. The MOV version imports cleanly.
- Clients ask for it
- Agencies and editors on Mac often ask for MOV. This gives them exactly that.
When to shrink at the same time
- A 4K phone clip can be 1 GB for a minute. If the MOV is going into an edit, keep "Best quality". If it is going to a client over email or WhatsApp, pick a target size and it arrives as a MOV under the limit.
- Resolution and frame rate caps are there too: 1080p and 30 fps is what most social platforms show anyway.
Questions people ask
Does MP4 to MOV lose quality?
Not visibly with "Best quality": it keeps a high quality that looks the same. Choosing a smaller size trades quality for size on purpose, at the level you pick.
Why does Final Cut or iMovie reject my MP4?
Usually the MP4 uses a codec or a variable frame rate the app does not like. The MOV from this tool uses H.264, which Apple apps accept.
Will the MOV be bigger?
About the same size or a little smaller with "Best quality". If you shrink it as well, it will be clearly smaller.
Can I convert MOV to MP4 instead?
Yes, the MOV to MP4 page does the reverse.
How long can the video be?
As long as you like; free space on the device is the only limit. Short clips take moments. Long 4K videos take longer, and go faster on a recent computer.
Is there a watermark?
No.
