Free tool
Auto captions Every word timed, edited like text, burned in.
Drop a video and have the words with their timing in a minute. Fix anything by typing, drag a line on the strip to retime it, pick a style, and export the MP4 with SRT and VTT.
Next: make it smaller, trim it or turn a moment into a GIF.
Why people pick this one
Most caption tools stop at a watermark, a five-minute cap or a monthly count, and none of them let you fix a word without leaving the timeline. Here the transcript is the editor: change a word, split a line, hold it a beat longer, drag it out of a face's way, and the export matches the preview.
- Works with
- MP4, MOV and WebM. Captions written from the sound, every word timed.
- Comes back as
- An MP4 with the captions burned in, at the size of your video, plus SRT, VTT and plain text.
- Editing
- Every line is text you edit, with its start and end. Split with Enter, join with Backspace, retime on the strip, drag the block anywhere on the picture, undo anything.
- Styles
- Boxed, clean, outlined or pop, with a word lit up as it is said, your colours, four fonts, one or two lines at a time, all caps if you like.
- Runs
- In your browser.
- Price
- Free, no watermark.
How to add captions to a video
- Drop the video in. It opens in the editor with the picture on the right and an empty transcript on the left.
- Press Generate auto captions. The sound goes out, the words come back with their timing, already grouped into lines.
- Fix and style. Click a word to jump to it, edit the text in place, drag a line's ends on the strip, pick a style and see it on the video as you go.
- Export. SRT, VTT and text download on their own.
Editing that actually edits
- Fix a word
- Type over it. The timing stays with the words around it, so a corrected name or a missed comma never shifts the line.
- Split and join
- Enter splits a line where the cursor is and the new line starts on the next word. Backspace at the start of a line joins it to the one before.
- Retime
- Drag either end of a line on the strip under the video, or drag the whole line, or type a start and end. The words inside keep their spacing.
- Hold or cut early
- Pull a line's end later to keep it up through a pause, or earlier so it leaves before the shot changes.
- Move it
- Drag the caption block anywhere on the picture, or pick top, middle or low. It stays where you put it in the export.
- Regroup
- Set how many words share a line and how many lines show at once, then regroup the whole transcript in one click.
Good to know
- Come back within a week and the project is still here.
Questions people ask
Is it free, and is there a watermark?
Free, and nothing is added to the video.
How accurate are the words and the timing?
Clear speech comes back nearly word-perfect with timing within a fraction of a second. Names, jargon and heavy accents miss more often, which is what the editor is for: click the word, type the right one, done. Music under the voice lowers accuracy; a clip that is only music comes back empty.
Which languages work?
Auto captions recognise most major languages and detect which one is spoken. The styles, fonts and export work for any language.
Can I make word-by-word captions like on TikTok?
Yes. Pick the Pop or Boxed style, keep the word highlight on, and set three to five words per line. Each word lights up as it is said and the export matches the preview exactly.
How long does the export take?
About as long as the video, often less on a laptop with a hardware encoder. A two-minute clip is usually ready in one to two minutes, with a progress bar.
Which browsers work?
Chrome and Edge on a computer have everything. Safari and Firefox work with most videos; iPhone videos recorded as HEVC open in Chrome, Edge and Safari but not Firefox, and the MOV to MP4 tool fixes that in one step.
Can I get just the SRT?
Yes. Open Export and download the SRT, VTT or plain text without making a video at all. They carry every edit you made.
