How to compress an MP4

  1. Drop the MP4 in. One file or several.
  2. Pick how small. "Balanced" is the everyday choice, about half the size with no visible change. "Small" goes further. "Target size" lets you type the exact MB a platform or an inbox allows.
  3. Download the smaller MP4. Same format, plays everywhere the original did.

Where the size goes

Bitrate
Phones and screen recorders record at far more bits per second than the picture needs. Re-encoding at a sensible bitrate removes most of the file without a visible change.
Resolution
4K on a phone screen looks like 1080p. Capping the resolution when the destination is a phone or a chat cuts the file hard.
Frame rate
60 fps to 30 fps halves the frames for footage that is not fast action.

Questions people ask

Does compressing an MP4 lose quality?

A little, deliberately, in places the eye does not notice. "Balanced" is visually identical for almost all footage. "Small" and low target sizes show softness in fast motion and fine detail.

How much smaller will it get?

Phone and screen recordings usually drop 50 to 90 percent. A file that was already compressed well shrinks less; the result shows both sizes.

Can I set an exact size?

Yes. Choose "Target size" and type the MB. The tool works out the bitrate from the length and lands at or under the number.

Will it still be an MP4?

Yes, with H.264 video, the most compatible choice.

How long does it take?

Short clips take moments. Long 4K videos take longer, and go faster on a recent computer.
