How to resize an image for a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Drop the image in. A frame from the video, a photo, a design exported from Canva or Figma.
  2. Place the box. It opens at 16:9 over the image; drag it to the part you want. Or choose Keep the whole photo to put all of it on a blurred or solid background.
  3. Download as JPG. Choose JPG at quality 90 for a file well under YouTube's 2 MB limit.

YouTube thumbnail size and rules

Dimensions
1280 × 720 pixels, 16:9. YouTube accepts larger 16:9 images too, but 1280 × 720 is what it serves and what the studio recommends.
File size
Under 2 MB. A 1280 × 720 JPG at quality 90 is usually 150 to 400 KB.
Format
JPG, PNG, GIF or BMP. JPG is the safe choice; PNG is fine for graphics with flat colors.
Minimum width
640 pixels. Anything narrower is refused or looks soft.

Before you upload
