How to compress a JPG
- Drop the JPG files in. Photos from a phone or camera, scans, screenshots saved as JPG. Several at once.
- Pick a quality or a target size. Quality 80 is the everyday choice: a fraction of the size, no visible change. "Target file size" lets you type 100 KB, 200 KB or whatever a form demands.
- Download. Each file, or all of them, with the saving shown on each.
Where the size goes
- Quality
- Cameras and phones save JPGs at quality 95 or higher, far more than a screen can show. Re-saving at 80 removes half to three quarters of the file with no visible change; 60 is fine for thumbnails.
- Dimensions
- A 4000-pixel photo shown 800 pixels wide carries 25 times the pixels it needs. The maximum width setting cuts the file the most of anything.
- Metadata
- Camera settings, previews and location data add up to a few hundred KB on some photos and are dropped on the way through.
Common size limits
- Job portals and government forms
- Often 100 KB or 200 KB per photo. Type the number as the target; the tool lowers the quality first and shrinks the dimensions only if it has to.
- Email and messaging
- Attachment limits are in MB, but 20 photos at 5 MB each will not attach. Quality 80 and a 2000 px width brings them to a few hundred KB each.
- Web pages
- Under 200 KB per image is the usual page-speed target. Quality 80 and a width matching the layout gets there.
Questions people ask
Can I compress a JPG without losing quality?
Not literally, since JPG compression always discards something, but at quality 80 the loss is invisible on a screen, and the file is typically 60 to 80 percent smaller. Compare the before and after yourself; the original is untouched.
How do I compress a JPG to 100 KB or 200 KB?
Choose "Target file size" and type 100 or 200. The tool lowers the quality until the file fits, then reduces the dimensions if quality alone is not enough.
What quality setting should I use?
80 for photos you will share or upload, 70 for web pages where speed matters, 90 for prints and portfolios, 60 for thumbnails.
Can I compress many JPGs at once?
Yes. Drop them all; each is compressed with the same settings and one button downloads everything.
Will it keep the EXIF data?
No. Location, camera and date tags are dropped, which is usually what you want before sharing. Use the remove EXIF tool if you need control over that.
