How to get a thumbnail from a video
- Drop the video in.
- Find the frame. Scrub, then step by a frame until the face and the motion are right.
- Save it. At the video's own size or a preset like 1280 × 720 for YouTube, as JPG, PNG or WebP.
What makes a frame work as a thumbnail
- A face, mid-expression, eyes open. Step frame by frame; the good one is often two frames from the one you paused on.
- Motion blur reads as energy on a frame but as a mistake on a thumbnail. Step until edges are crisp.
- Leave room on one side for text if you add a title later.
- Export at the platform size, not larger. YouTube resamples anything over 1280 × 720 anyway.
Questions people ask
Which video files work?
MP4 with H.264, WebM and MOV with H.264 open in every browser. HEVC MOV files from iPhones open in Safari and in Chrome on most Macs and recent Windows machines; a video this browser can't play isn't supported.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
1280 by 720, under 2 MB, JPG or PNG. The 16:9 preset exports exactly that. For a portrait cover on Reels or TikTok use the 9:16 preset.
Can I step frame by frame?
Yes. The frame buttons move by one thirtieth of a second, and the arrow keys move the scrubber when it's focused.
Why does the frame look different from what I see in the player?
Some players apply color adjustments or show a lower-resolution stream. The capture here is the actual decoded frame at the video's own resolution, or scaled to the preset you pick.
