How to convert WebP to JPG

  1. Drop the WebP files in. Right-click, save image gives you WebP on most sites now. Drop those files here, as many as you like.
  2. Pick a quality. Quality 90 keeps the image as it looked on the page. Lower it only if a size limit demands it.
  3. Download the JPGs. Named after the originals, ready for anything that refuses WebP.

Why WebP files are a problem

Old apps refuse them
Older versions of Photoshop, Office, Windows Photo Viewer and many phone galleries do not open WebP. JPG opens everywhere.
Upload forms reject them
Job portals, marketplaces, government sites and print services often accept JPG and PNG only. WebP is bounced with an unhelpful error.
Clients and printers ask for JPG
Sending a WebP means a reply asking for "a normal image". JPG is the normal image.

What happens to quality

  • WebP from a website is already compressed. Converting to JPG at quality 90 keeps it looking the same; the file is usually a little larger, because JPG is a less efficient format than WebP.
  • A WebP with transparency, such as a product cut-out, gets a background color where the transparency was. Choose it before converting, or convert to PNG to keep the transparency.
  • Animated WebP files are converted as their first frame. For a moving version, make a GIF or a video instead.

Questions people ask

Why did the website give me a WebP file?

Because WebP is smaller than JPG at the same quality, so sites serve it to load faster. Browsers show it fine; many other apps do not open it, which is why you are here.

Will the JPG look the same as the WebP?

At quality 90, yes. The JPG will usually be somewhat larger, since WebP compresses more efficiently.

What if the WebP has a transparent background?

JPG cannot hold transparency, so those areas are filled with the color you choose, white by default. Convert to PNG instead if you need the transparency kept.

Can I convert animated WebP?

Only the first frame comes through, as a still JPG. For the animation, make a GIF from a video.
