How to convert JPG to WebP

  1. Drop the JPG files in. A whole product catalogue or blog folder at once is fine.
  2. Pick a quality. Quality 80 to 85 is the usual choice for web images: visibly identical to the JPG, and clearly smaller.
  3. Download and upload. Named after the originals, ready for WordPress, Shopify, Webflow or a plain img tag.

Why WebP for the web

Smaller pages
WebP is about 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same visual quality. On an image-heavy page that is the difference between a pass and a fail on the page-speed report.
Every browser shows it
Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge and every phone browser have supported WebP for years. Only very old software does not.
Transparency if you need it
Unlike JPG, WebP can hold transparency, so it covers PNG jobs too, at PNG-beating sizes.

When not to convert

  • Files you send to people rather than publish. A client, a printer or an older app may not open WebP; send JPG.
  • Images that go through a platform that converts anyway. Instagram, X and Facebook re-encode uploads, so give them the best JPG instead.
  • If you will keep editing the image, keep the JPG or a PNG master and convert the final version only.

Questions people ask

How much smaller is WebP than JPG?

Typically 25 to 35 percent at the same visual quality, sometimes more on smooth photos. The result depends on the image; the tool shows both sizes.

Do all browsers support WebP?

All current ones, on desktop and phone. Support arrived in Safari in 2020 and everywhere else earlier.

What quality should I use?

Quality 80 to 85 for web pages. Go to 90 for portfolio or product photography where every detail sells.

Can I convert a whole folder?

Yes. Drop all the files; each is converted with the same setting and one button downloads them all.

Can I go back to JPG later?

Yes, with the WebP to JPG tool. Keep the original JPGs anyway; every lossy conversion loses a little.
