How to split an image into a carousel

  1. Drop in one wide image. A panorama, a long screenshot, or a design exported as one piece.
  2. Pick the slide ratio and count. 4:5 for Instagram, square if you must, 9:16 for TikTok. Automatic uses the image's width to decide how many slides.
  3. Download the slides. Numbered in order. Upload them in that order and the edges line up.

Designing for a seamless split

  • Make the source exactly slide-height tall and a whole number of slide-widths wide: for four 4:5 slides, 4320 × 1350. Then there is no crop.
  • Keep faces, headlines and buttons away from the cut lines. Show the preview and move them if they land on an edge.
  • The first slide is the one people judge. Put the hook there and let the rest reward the swipe.
  • Instagram uses the first slide's ratio for the whole carousel, so every slide is the same size here by design.

Questions people ask

What is a seamless carousel?

One wide image cut into slides so that swiping reveals it piece by piece and the edges line up. Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok photo posts all show carousels; a panorama that continues across slides gets held and swiped more than separate images.

Which size should each slide be?

Instagram shows carousels at the ratio of the first slide. 4:5 (1080 × 1350) fills the most screen and is the usual choice; 1:1 (1080 × 1080) is the safe classic; LinkedIn documents and TikTok prefer 4:5 or 9:16.

How many slides can I have?

Instagram allows 20, LinkedIn 20 in a post, TikTok 35 photos. Two to five slides is where most seamless carousels land; more and people stop swiping.

What if my image doesn't divide evenly?

The tool scales the image to the slide height and then either crops the last slide short of the end or pads the final slide to full width. Crop is the default because a partial final slide looks unfinished.

Can I make it from a design tool export?

Yes. Export one image at 1080 pixels tall by 1080 times the number of slides wide (for square), or 1350 tall by 1080 times the slide count (for 4:5), and the split is exact with no cropping.
