How to compress a PNG

  1. Drop the PNG files in. Screenshots, logos, icons, illustrations. Several at once.
  2. Leave it on quality, or set a target. The default cuts the file hard while keeping it a PNG with transparency. "Target file size" in KB switches to WebP when a PNG cannot get that small.
  3. Download. The saving is shown on each file.

How a PNG gets smaller without looking different

Fewer colors, cleverly chosen
A screenshot or a logo uses a few hundred distinct colors but is stored with room for millions. Reducing it to a palette of up to 256 colors chosen from the image, with dithering where it helps, cuts the file by half to four fifths and is invisible on graphics and text. This is what the well-known PNG compressors do.
Transparency kept
The palette carries transparency, so logos and cut-outs stay on their transparent background.
Dimensions
A 4K screenshot shown at half size carries four times the pixels it needs. The maximum width setting is the other big lever.

When PNG is the wrong format

  • Photos saved as PNG are huge and gain little from palette reduction. Convert them to JPG or WebP instead; the compress tool does that when you pick a target size.
  • Photographic gradients and shading can show slight banding at 256 colors. Graphics, text, icons and screenshots do not.
