Why AVIF files refuse to open
- A web format
- AVIF is what sites serve to save bandwidth, so a right-click save often lands one on your disk. Browsers show it; many editors, uploaders and older apps still do not.
- What JPG loses
- Nothing you can see at quality 90. AVIF can hold transparency and HDR; a JPG has a flat background and standard colors.

Questions people ask
What is an AVIF file?
An image format built on the AV1 video codec, smaller than JPG and WebP at the same quality. Sites use it to load faster, which is why downloads from the web often come as AVIF.
Why will my AVIF not open?
Support is still arriving in editors, office apps and upload forms. Converting to JPG sidesteps all of that.
Does the quality drop?
At quality 90 the JPG is visually the same as the AVIF. The file will be larger, because JPG compresses less efficiently.
