What does "remove line breaks" do to paragraphs?

It joins lines inside a paragraph into one line and keeps the blank lines between paragraphs. Turn on "remove empty lines" as well to get a single block of text.

What are hidden characters?

Zero-width spaces, joiners, non-breaking spaces and soft hyphens that come along when you copy from Word, Google Docs, PDFs and web pages. They're invisible but they break search, spacing and character counts. The cleaner replaces non-breaking spaces with normal ones and deletes the rest.

What are smart quotes?

The curly quotes and apostrophes that word processors insert. They look fine but break code, CSV files and some forms. Straighten turns them into plain quotes.

Does it change my words?

No. Only whitespace, quotes, hidden characters, and, if you tick them, emoji, URLs and hashtags. Your words, numbers and punctuation stay as they are.

Can I clean a whole document?
