How to split a song into stems
- Drop the song in. It starts playing at once, so you can check it is the right file, while it gets ready.
- Press Split the song. The song is sent over a secure connection and split in about two minutes. A progress bar shows where it is.
- Listen, then download. Each stem has its own play bar and volume. Tick the stems you want and download them together, or take one at a time. The volume you set is kept in the file.
What people split songs for
- Karaoke and covers
- Mute the vocals and sing over the original band, at the original tempo and key.
- Acapellas for remixes and edits
- Pull the vocal out clean to lay over a new beat, or to chop for a sample.
- Drums and bass on their own
- Lift a drum break, learn a bass line, or rebuild a groove from the parts.
- Practice
- Turn your own instrument down to hear what the rest of the band is doing, or up to learn a part.
- Video and content
- Keep the music bed and lose the singing under a voiceover, or the other way round.
- Transcription and lyrics
- Isolated vocals are far easier to transcribe. Send the vocal stem through the transcribe tool.
Questions people ask
Is this stem splitter really free?
Yes. The first four minutes of any song split free, three songs a day per person, with no watermark and no sign-up. A free account takes the length cap off, adds WAV, and comes with 20 minutes of splitting.
Which stems do I get?
Four: vocals, drums, bass and everything else, which holds guitars, keys, synths and the rest. Together they add back up to the song.
How good is the separation?
Studio grade, among the best available today. Lead and backing vocals come out clean on most songs; the hardest cases are heavy reverb and vocals buried in dense guitars, where a little of the band can remain.
How long does it take?
About two minutes for a song. The first split after a quiet spell can take a couple of minutes longer while a machine starts up; the page says so while you wait.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Any recent phone or computer will do.
Can I use the stems commercially?
The tool puts no restriction on what you make. The rights in the song itself stay with whoever owns it, so covers, remixes and samples follow the usual rules for that music.
What formats can I upload?
MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, and a video's soundtrack (MP4, MOV, WebM). Up to 100 MB without an account.
