How to convert PNG to JPG
- Drop the PNG files in. One or many. A 20 MB screenshot is instant.
- Set the quality and the background. Quality 90 is close to lossless and about a fifth of the size. JPG has no transparency, so choose the color that fills those areas; white suits most documents and product shots.
- Download. Each file, or all of them at once, named after the originals.
Why people convert PNG to JPG
- Size
- A photo or screenshot saved as PNG is often five to ten times larger than the same image as JPG at quality 90, with no visible difference. Upload forms, email and web pages all reward the smaller file.
- Upload rules
- Many forms, job sites, government portals and marketplaces accept JPG only, or cap uploads at 1 or 2 MB. A PNG that fails the rule converts in seconds.
- Cameras and print shops
- Photo printers and some editing apps expect JPG. Sending a PNG gets it refused or silently converted at a lower quality than you would pick yourself.
When to keep the PNG
- Logos, icons and anything with transparency. JPG fills transparent areas with a solid color, so a logo on a transparent background comes back on a white or colored square.
- Text-heavy screenshots and diagrams with sharp edges. JPG softens hard edges slightly; at quality 90 or above it is hard to see, at 60 it is not.
- Anything you will keep editing. Each JPG save loses a little; convert once, at the end.
Questions people ask
Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?
A little, by design. JPG compresses by discarding detail the eye is least likely to notice. At quality 90 the loss is invisible on photos and screenshots; at 60 you will see softness around text and edges. The original PNG is untouched, so you can convert again at another setting.
What happens to transparency?
JPG has no transparency. Transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, white by default. If you need the transparency kept, convert to WebP instead, or keep the PNG.
How much smaller will the JPG be?
For photos and screenshots, usually 70 to 90 percent smaller at quality 90. Flat graphics with few colors shrink less, and can even grow; those are better kept as PNG.
Can I convert many PNGs at once?
Yes. Drop as many as you like; each one is converted with the same settings, and one button downloads them all.
Is JPG the same as JPEG?
Yes. JPEG is the format, JPG is the three-letter file extension from the days when extensions were limited to three characters. The files are identical.
