How to convert MP4 to GIF

  1. Drop the MP4 in. It plays in the page so you can find the moment.
  2. Pick the start, the length and the size. Up to 10 seconds. 480 px wide at 12 fps is the sweet spot for chats and posts; 320 px for very small files.
  3. Make it and download. The size is shown before you save, so you can trim it to a limit.

GIF or video: which to post

GIF
Autoplays and loops everywhere, including places that block video: chat apps, comments, email signatures, documentation. The price is size and a 256-color palette.
Keep it short and small
A GIF stores every frame as an image, so ten seconds at 640 px can be 15 MB. Three to five seconds at 480 px and 12 fps is usually 2 to 4 MB and looks fine.
Where size limits bite
Slack shows GIFs up to a few MB comfortably. Discord free accounts cap uploads at 10 MB. Giphy and Tenor uploads want under 8 MB.

Questions people ask

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 10 seconds. GIFs grow fast with length, so most good ones are three to five seconds.

Why is my GIF so large?

Every frame is a full image. Reduce the width to 480 or 320 px, the frame rate to 10 or 12, or the length. The size is shown before you download, so you can adjust.

Why do the colors look different?

GIF is limited to 256 colors per image. Gradients and subtle shading show slight banding; flat graphics and screen recordings look unchanged.

Can I make a GIF with sound?

No. GIF has no audio. For a short clip with sound, compress the MP4 instead.

Does it work with MOV or WebM?

Yes, anything your browser plays. The MOV to GIF page is preset for iPhone videos.
