How to use bold text in a bio
The apps don't have a bold button. This is the workaround everyone uses.
- Type the text. Every style updates as you type.
- Copy the one you want. Bold and italic for emphasis, script for a name, monospace for a code or a handle.
- Paste it into the app. Instagram bio, X display name, TikTok caption, LinkedIn post, WhatsApp status. Anywhere text goes.
Where each style fits
- Bold and sans bold
- The first line of a bio or a caption hook. Reads cleanly on every device.
- Italic
- A tagline or a quote. Serif italic reads as editorial, sans italic as modern.
- Script
- A name or a brand word. One or two words, not a sentence.
- Monospace
- Handles, codes, dates and anything that should look typed.
- Small caps, circled, fullwidth
- Section labels and playful headers. Check them on an old phone before relying on them.
- Strikethrough and underline
- Built from combining marks. They work in most apps and break in a few, so test.
Questions people ask
How does bold text work on Instagram and X if they don't allow formatting?
These aren't formatted letters. They're different Unicode characters that happen to look bold, italic or script, the same way ½ is a character rather than a formatted 1/2. Any box that accepts text accepts them: bios, captions, comments, usernames on some apps, WhatsApp, Discord.
Will it show correctly on every phone?
On all current iPhones, Androids, Macs and Windows PCs, yes. Very old devices or apps with limited fonts may show a box for some styles. Bold, italic and monospace are the safest; fraktur and double-struck are the most likely to be missing.
Is it bad for accessibility?
Yes, somewhat. Screen readers read these as mathematical symbols, letter by letter, or skip them. Use a styled word or two for emphasis, not a whole bio, and never for something people must read, like a link or a phone number.
Does it work for numbers and punctuation?
Numbers have bold, sans bold, monospace and double-struck versions. Other characters, punctuation and letters with accents stay as they are, so a styled sentence keeps its commas and question marks.
Can I use it in a username?
Instagram and X usernames only allow plain letters, numbers, dots and underscores. Display names and bios accept styled text.
Is my text stored?
No. Nothing is sent or saved.
