How to blur part of a photo

  1. Drop the image in. Or paste a screenshot straight from the clipboard. JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF.
  2. Mark what to hide. Drag a rectangle or an ellipse over a face, a name, a plate or a card number, or paint over it with the brush. Add as many areas as you need; each one gets a small x to remove it.
  3. Pick the effect and download. Blur for faces and backgrounds, Pixelate or Solid bar for text and numbers. Download as the same format, or as JPG, PNG or WebP.

Blur, pixelate or a solid bar: which hides more

Three effects, and they are not equally safe.

Blur
Softens the area so a face or a background can't be made out. Good for people who didn't ask to be in the shot. Not good for text: a light blur keeps enough of the letter shapes that a determined person can guess digits and short words back out. If you blur text, push the strength high.
Pixelate
Replaces the area with flat blocks, each the average of the pixels under it. With big blocks (20 or more on a normal screenshot) the information is genuinely gone. It also reads as deliberate, which is what you want when you're hiding a name or an address on purpose.
Solid bar
Paints the area one flat color. Nothing to recover, ever. Use it for account numbers, addresses, phone numbers, anything where the point is that it's hidden, not that it looks natural.

What people hide, and the effect that suits it

Faces
Ellipse plus Blur at 20 to 30. Bystanders, children, anyone who didn't consent to being posted.
Names, handles and emails in a screenshot
Rectangle plus Pixelate with blocks of 20 or more, or a solid bar. Good for sharing a DM, a comment or a receipt.
License plates
Rectangle plus Pixelate or bar. Plates are short and printed in a known font, which makes them the easiest thing to recover from a weak blur.
Addresses, card numbers, order numbers
Solid bar. A bar never leaks.
Backgrounds
Brush plus Blur. Paint over the messy room, the whiteboard, the other screen.

Questions people ask

How do I blur a face in a photo?

Drop the photo in, keep Rectangle or switch to Ellipse, and drag a box over the face. It blurs straight away. Raise the strength if features still show, then download. For several faces, draw several boxes.

How do I blur text in a screenshot?

Paste the screenshot (Ctrl or Cmd V works on this page), drag a rectangle over the line you want gone, and pick Pixelate or Solid bar. Text is the one case where a light blur is not enough: letters have strong shapes that can be guessed back.

Can blurred text be recovered?

Sometimes, yes. A mild blur keeps most of the information in the pixels, and people have recovered numbers and short words from it. A pixelate with big blocks throws that information away, and a solid bar leaves nothing at all. For anything sensitive, use blocks of 20 or more, or a bar.

Is pixelate safer than blur?

With large blocks, yes. Each block is the average of the pixels under it, so a 30 pixel block over a 40 pixel line of text keeps about one value per letter and a half. Small blocks over big text are not safer than blur, so match the block size to what you're hiding.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Drawing works with a finger, the brush included, and the download lands in your photos or files like any other download.

Which formats can I use?

JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP and GIF (the first frame) go in. You can download as the same format, or as JPG, PNG or WebP. PNG keeps transparency and is the safest choice for screenshots. HEIC from an iPhone needs converting first; the HEIC to JPG tool does that.
