How to make a QR code

  1. Pick what it opens. A link, plain text, a WiFi network, a contact card, an email or a phone number. The code is drawn as you type.
  2. Make it yours. Set the colors, keep the white margin, add a logo if it's for a brand. Error correction goes to the top level automatically when a logo is added.
  3. Download and test. PNG for screens and documents, SVG for print at any size. Scan it with your own phone before it goes anywhere.

What each type does

Link
Opens the address in the phone's browser. Include https:// so every phone treats it as a link. Add UTM tags if you want to see the scans in your analytics.
Text
Shows the words on screen. Good for a short message, a code word, a serial number.
WiFi
Offers to join the network, password included, on iPhone and Android. Put it on the wall of the studio or the café.
Contact
A vCard the phone offers to save: name, phone, email, company, website. The business card that never runs out.
Email
Opens a new message with the address, subject and body filled in.
Phone
Starts a call to the number.

Make it scan every time

  • Dark code on a light background. Phones struggle with light-on-dark and with two mid-tones.
  • Keep the white margin. It's how the camera finds the edges of the code.
  • Print at 2 cm or more, and about a tenth of the distance it will be scanned from.
  • Shorter content makes a simpler code that scans faster. Link shorteners help if the URL is long.
  • With a logo, leave error correction on High. Then test it with a phone, in the real lighting.

Questions people ask

Do these QR codes expire?

No. A static QR code carries the content itself, so it works for as long as the link or text it points to works. There is no account, no server and nothing to renew.

Can I use them commercially?

Yes, for anything: packaging, menus, business cards, posters, ads. There is no license, watermark or scan limit.

Does it track scans?

No. Tracking needs a dynamic code that routes through a server, which is what paid generators sell. This makes static codes: private, permanent and untracked. If you want scan counts, put a link with UTM tags in the code and read them in your analytics.

Will a logo stop it scanning?

Not if error correction is high enough. The generator switches to the highest level (30 percent of the code can be covered) when you add a logo and keeps the logo under a fifth of the width. Always test with your phone before printing.

How big should I print it?

At least 2 cm across for a poster read at arm's length, larger if it will be scanned from further away: roughly a tenth of the scanning distance. Keep the white margin around it; phones need it to find the code.

Why isn't my QR code scanning?

Usually low contrast, a missing margin, a logo covering too much, or a URL without https://. Dark on light scans best; light on dark and low-contrast colour pairs fail on many phones. Download the SVG for print so it stays sharp at any size.

Do WiFi and contact codes work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Both camera apps read WiFi codes and offer to join the network, and both open contact cards for saving. The card uses the vCard format every phone understands.
