How to convert WAV to M4A
- Drop the WAV files in. One or a folder.
- Pick a bitrate. 256 kbps keeps a music master sounding like itself; 128 kbps is plenty for a voice recording.
- Download the M4As. The full length of each, named after the originals.
Why M4A from a WAV
- Size
- A minute of stereo WAV is about 10 MB. The same minute as M4A at 256 kbps is under 2 MB and sounds the same on any speaker.
- Apple apps
- iPhone, Mac, GarageBand, iMovie and Final Cut take M4A natively. It is also the format Apple Music uses.
- Keep the WAV
- The WAV is the master. Convert copies to share and keep the original for editing.
Questions people ask
What bitrate should I use?
256 kbps for music, 128 to 192 kbps for speech. Above 256 kbps AAC gains almost nothing.
Does M4A lose quality?
A little, by design. At 256 kbps the difference from the WAV is inaudible for nearly everyone.
Can I make the file mono?
Yes. Mono halves the size and suits a voice recording.
Can I convert several at once?
Yes. Drop the folder and one button downloads every M4A.
